Dear Sirs, I have seen several snakes on my land here in Sicily, most are the Western Whip snake, but I have seen one I cannot identify, Do you know where I may send a photo for identification? I love my snakes, but need to understand if they are poisonous or not (we have dogs and children) Thank you for any help Tony

Hi I rescued some tadpoles from a puddle in Vigonza, province of Padova and they are toads I am guessing as the eggs I saw later are in long strings. Is there much chance that I have an introduced species that I should not be encouraging? As I am not from Italy my knowledge of local fauna is limited as is my ability to read websites in Italian. If you have any ideas I would be grateful for your advice. margmarg@me.com Thanks so much

Good work, and as the previous commentators said, thanks for sharing it. I am very envious of your siting of the azure winged magpie, whose range I think is just outside the area of southern Spain that I usually visit each year.

Absolutely fantastic site. Currently in southern Spain trying to id photos of several Lizards and a Snake, latter a Montpellier and came across you, now saved in my favourites. Anything for North Africa would be useful as I travel to Morocco and Egypt. Totally admire your commitment to the quest. Brilliant.

@ Tobias: finding Algerian whip snake at the Red Tower is highly unlikely, as it has been believed to be restricted to the wider Valletta area since forever. There is no black snake with a red lateral stripe in Europe. Leopard snake can be striped (see e.g. Milos reports), but is never black. Note that juvenile and subadult western whip snakes (after all the most abundant and/or readily found Maltese snake) can have quite a lot of different patterns.

Great site. Just returned from a tourist trip to malta and googled snakes and malta to identufy the two snakes I saw on the same spot as you in front of the red tower. The first was probably the algerian whip, but the second was black with a red stripe on the side. I cant really match it with any of the 3 snake speices confirmed to live in malta...

Hello Jeroen, I am studying psychotropic substances, hence the following question concerning the licking of frogs. Do you know which frog will give you the best trip and which parts you have to lick? thanks!

Well, thanks, but including coordinates offers open access to anyone, including people who want to collect animals from the wild. It is exactly to avoid this from happening that the reports are kept sufficiently vague.

First Thanks for having the time to make this excellent site. Great trip reports! I especially liked the Making of... it gives me a lot of ideas for my future trips. Keep the good work . I think the future inclusion of coordinates of your finds will improve even more your reports and can be used for future protection of the sites of vulnerable and rare animals. Thanks again for the Great report for Bulgaria .

Hi Jeroen, i came on this for me new or updated looking website of yours via the famous EuropFieldHerpCommunity site. Your site (i.e.Herpetofauna of Europe)is excellent again with that modestly B-labelled magnificent A-report on the SAMOS 2009 field trip! G's and A+, Cornelius

Thanks for the Montenegro 25th of April-9th of May 2008 trip report. We emigrated to Montenegro 3 years ago to set up an eco campsite and have seen all manner of reptiles that we (& others in the ex-pat community here) could not identify as often the locals know only the local language names. Your report features many of them and provides a springboard for further research. I'll be passing the link round to the ex-pat community here. Hope that's OK.

Well, congratulations to awesome work you have already done. Very nice photos, interesting trip reports. I would like to invite you for a Central Europe trip to see some unique subspecies like Ablepharus kitaibelii fitzingeri or Vipera ursinii rakosiensis. You can also observe a lot of european species surviving at extreme climatic conditions.

Impressive pictures from Andalussia. I´m an amateur photographer who spends a lot of time trying to capture images as these ones taken in the most nicest natural reserve of Andalussia (Sierra de Grazalema, Cádiz). It is so difficult to find the suitable place, the animals and to be able to take the pictures...... CONGRATULATIONS.

I think Oliver is right. Many fieldherpers out there will like to know about your gear, including handling equipment such as tongs, gloves, snares, etc. Tips and tricks for some secretive species are also welcomed. Keep up the good work.

Thank for your website. To my eyes, it is the reference for herp in europe! But you should really think about adding one chapter called "making of" where you could talk a bit about technique and photo equipment used to get those stunning pictures on the field.
